What are Craftsmen Introduction pages?
Craftsmen Introduction Pages --detailed interviews and photographs of XCIDIA’s craftsmen, designers, and proprietors-- further promote sales by giving retailers and sales reps a close-up view of the effort and care that go into the creation of our makers’ products.
When would a Craftsmen Introduction be effective?
Well, take for example lacquerware. In English, just as porcelain is referred to as “China,” lacquerware is sometimes referred to as “Japan.” Japanese lacquerware has long been recognized in Europe and North America as a specialty item. Recently however, with the advent of 100 Yen shops ($1 Shops in the U.S.), it has become possible to buy cheap plastic imitations of Japan’s classic lacquerware.
As most Japanese know, from the extraction and refinement of lacquer from the Sumac tree, to the actual application of the lacquer, there are 30-40 complicated processes involved in the creation of authentic Japanese lacquerware. Additionally, there are numerous different lacquering styles. Unfortunately, misunderstandings sometimes occur with those abroad that have never seen Japanese lacquerware. Often they see a picture of real Japanese lacquerware, and assume it is the same plastic stuff they can buy for a dollar.
Through the Craftsmen Introduction pages, we wanted to give our Makers the chance to show potential buyers the true quality and value of authentic made-in-Japan products. Not limited to just a picture and brief product description, Craftsmen Introductions pages allow Makers to explain their creative vision, show the creation process, tell how a product is best used, and express all the other fine details about their products that aren’t completely conveyed in general use of the Online Wholesale Market.

How are the materials collected?
Our interviewer/cameraman visits the maker studio or designer’s office to collect the materials for the Craftsmen Introduction pages. The visit will be coordinated in advance by telephone or mail, so there is no need to worry about being unexpectedly bombarded with questions. Pictures are taken in whatever scenery the maker/designer prefers.
